Beyond the office

The person beyond medicine.

I am married and father of three children. My family occupies a central place in my life. I am Catholic, I cultivate my spiritual life and I like to play sports.

These parts of my life coexist with medicine every day. I have interests and responsibilities that go beyond work, and I consider it important that an about me page also shows this.

Bioethics and research

Academic questions that accompany medical practice.

I completed my master's degree in Bioethics studying the ethical dilemmas of penis enlargement procedures in men with normal dimensions. It was a way to examine a question that comes up frequently in medicine: an intervention may be technically possible, but that still doesn't answer whether it's appropriate for the person seeking it.

Today, in my doctorate at UNIFESP, I investigate sexuality counseling provided by artificial intelligence systems and the values present in the answers these tools offer. I also participate in research projects related to men's health and fertility.

This academic work accompanies my medical practice. It helps me keep open questions about the limits of an intervention, the quality of evidence, and the weight of expectations of those seeking care.

What guides my work

Ability to treat and responsibility to choose well.

I try to practice medicine in which the ability to treat is accompanied by the responsibility to choose well. This applies to an exam, medication or surgery.

My vision is influenced by personalism, which recognizes each patient as a unique person, with dignity, freedom, their own story and never just as a diagnosis or a set of symptoms. Fertility and sexuality involve physical, emotional, relational and, often, spiritual dimensions. Therefore, medical care needs to consider the person as a whole and build, together with them, decisions that respect their values, their reality and what is important to them throughout the treatment.
